Taylor purchased a rectangular plot of area 634 m2. The length of the plot is 2 m more than thrice its breadth. Find the approximate values of the length and breadth of the rectangular plot.
44.6m & 14.20m
Let x be the breadth of the plot.
Then length of the plot = 3x+2
Area of the rectangle=length × breadth=(3x+2)x
⇒634=3x2+2x
So, 3x2+2x−634=0
By solving the quadratic equation, we get, x=14.20 andx=−14.87 (approximately).
∵ breadth can't be negative, the positive value of breadth is taken.
∴ length = 14.20 m and breadth = 44.60 m
