Solution

<!--td {border: 1px solid #ccc;}br {mso-data-placement:same-cell;}--> On burning a magnesium ribbon in the air, ash is formed. The ash obtained by burning magnesium ribbon is dissolved in water and tested for its acidic or basic nature. On dipping in water, it is observed that red litmus turns to blue colour and thus it can be concluded that metallic oxides are basic.
