The Nizam of Hyderabad gave up the ownership of the Rayalaseema area consisting of Bellary, Anantapur, Kadapa, and Kurnool - to the British. Thomas Munro was appointed as the Chief Collector of the region. Munro observed that in the Andhra and Tamil regions there were close-knit peasant communities who held their land, cultivated it, and paid their revenue. Munro realized the importance of peasants and introduced the Ryotwari system in the southern part of India, and later in western India as well.
