Solution

Thymus gland and its hormone:

Thymus gland is a lobe-like structure located in the chest between the lungs, behind the sternum. The gland secretes thymosin whose functions are as follows:-
  • Stimulates the production and differentiation of T cells thereby helping in cell mediated immunity.
  • Plays a minor role in stimulating the B cells to produce antibodies thus improving the humoral immunity.

Effect of aging on thymus gland:

The thymus gland degenerates with age. This leads to a drop in the level of thymosin. This declines the differentiation of T cells and production of antibodies. As a result, the old people fall sick quite often due to their weakened immunity.
