Some important properties of cathode rays are:
1) When an object such as a metal cross is placed in the path of the cathode rays, they generate a shadow of the object at the back of glass tube. So, cathode rays travel in straight lines.
2) When an electric field is applied on the cathode rays, they are deflected towards the positive plate of the electric field thus cathode rays carry negative charge.
3) Cathode rays produce heating effect. Thus, when cathode rays strike a metal foil, it becomes hot.
