Acids react with metals to form hydrogen gas and the respective salt. Iron and dilute H2SO4 react as follows:
Fe(s)+H2SO4(dil)→+FeSO4(aq)+H2(g)
Hydrogen gas is evolved in this reaction. When hydrogen gas is ignited with a burning matchstick, it puts out the fire with a 'pop' sound.
