Temperature of a bimetallic strip of copper and zinc rivetted together is increased from 20∘C to 100∘C. Which of the following options correctly represents the final condition of the bimetallic strip? [Znα=30×10−6/∘C,Cuα=17×10−6/∘C]

Solution
The correct option is A Zinc strip will be on outer side of arc. Since the the strips are rivetted together, they cannot move along each other due to expansion. Hence they will bend. L∘=20cm ΔT=80∘C αZn=30×10−6/∘C αCu=17×10−6/∘C We know for linear expansion, length of strip L=L∘(1+αΔT) For Zn, LZn=20(1+30×10−6×80)=20.048cm For Cu, LCu=20(1+17×10−6×80)=20.027cm As, LZn>LCu
Therefore, zinc strip will be on outer side as length of outer arc is greater.
