Temporary hardness of water is due to
Temporary hardness of water is due to the presence of soluble calcium bicarbonate (Ca(HCO3)2) and magnesium bicarbonate (Mg(HCO3)2).
It is called temporary because it can be easily removed by boiling.
Ca(HCO3)2(aq) boil−−→ CaCO3(↓) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
Mg(HCO3)2(aq) boil−−→ MgCO3(↓) + H2O(l) + CO2(g)
On boiling, the bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium form their respective insoluble carbonates. These precipitates are removed by filtration.
