The homologus chromosomes are attached at multiple points in order for recombination (known as chaismata) before diakinesis. During diakinesis (last stage of prophase-I in meiosis-I) these attachments start moving towards the edges (terminal ends) of the chromosome and thus the non-sister chromatids are linked to each other by these points only until they are separated in anaphase I.
