Question

Test tube (A) contains aqueous zinc acetate solution while test tube (B) contains aqueous zinc chloride solution. When H2S gas is passed into each solution, in (A), ZnS is precipated and in (B), HCl formed dissolved ZnS formed.
(A) : Zn(CH3COO)2+H2SZnS+CH3COOH
(B) : ZnCl3+H2SZnS+2HCl

Solution

In the test tube (A), zinc acetate reacts with hydrogen sulphide to form a precipitate of zinc sulphide.
Zn(CH3COO)2+H2SZnS+CH3COOH
In the test tube (B), zinc chloride reacts with hydrogen sulphide to form zinc sulphide which is soluble in HCl solution. Hence, no precipitate is obtained.
ZnCl3+H2SZnS+2HCl
