Question

Dhruv has made an electric circuit as shown below, using a battery connected to an LED bulb and two electrodes dipped in the solution S. He quickly found out that the bulb is not glowing.

Assuming that there are no broken wires and the circuit is closed, what could have been the error in this case?

Solution

Since it is given that all the connections in Dhruv's circuit are proper and closed, the error could be with:
  • The LED bulb - it could have been a faulty or broken bulb.

  • The battery itself - it might be a battery whose chemical content is exhausted or finished.
The solution S which is used to complete the circuit, also plays a major role. If it is not a conducting liquid, it cannot help in making the LED glow. Lemon juice is a good conductor of electricity. But, distilled water cannot conduct electricity, so, it cannot complete the circuit to make the LED glow.
