To spend the least number of bills, John has to spend the as many of the higher valued bills as possible.

Now, using the least number of bills, we get a sum of $170 as:

$170=$100+$60+$10 =$100×1+$20×3+$10×1

So, in order to spend $170, John uses one $100 bill, three $20 bills and one $10bill.

Subtracting the bills spent from the initial set of bills John had, we get:


So, the final set of bills remaining with John will be:

3×($10)+0×($20)+1×($100)
