We take:

Volume of pure milk=M
Volume of water added=W

Now, the money earned is always proportional to the volume that is sold.

So, taking 'k' as the proportionality constant, we have:

Money earned selling watered down milk=k×(M+W)k×(M+W)=$36....Equation 1

Similarly,

Money earned selling pure milk=k×Mk×M=$30......Equation 2

Dividing equation (1) by equation (2), we get:

k×(M+W)k×M=$36$30

[1+WM]=[1+630]

WM=630=15

W=M5

So, for 1 gallon of milk, the volume of water added will be:

W=15=0.2 gal
