Given,

$\frac{x + 1}{x + 4} = \frac{2}{3}$

On cross multiplication, we get,

$3 \times (x + 1) = 2 \times (x + 4) \Rightarrow 3 x + 3 = 2 x + 8$

Transposing $2 x$ from RHS to LHS and 3 from LHS to RHS, we get,

$3 x - 2 x = 8 - 3 x = 5$
