Question

Statement: Alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2) get dissolved in a concentrated solution of NaOH under pressure. Al(OH)3 is precipitated when CO2 is passed or by seeding with some freshly precipitated Al(OH)3.

If the statement is true enter 1 else 0.

Solution

With hot concentrated NaOH solution the Alumina dissolves as sodium tetrahydroxyaluminate (NaAl(OH)4)

Al2O3+2NaOH+3H2ONaAl(OH)4
Silica reacts with hot and concentrated NaOH forming sodium silicate (Na2SiO3)

NaOH+SiO2Na2SiO3+H2O

Al(OH)3 is precipitated by passing CO2 and seeded with freshly precipitated Al(OH)3 which induces precipitation of Al(OH)3 as follows.

2NaAl(OH)4+CO22Al(OH)3ppt.+Na2CO3+H2O

The given statement is true.
The correct entry is 1.
