Statement 2: Solid carbon dioxide is stored under high pressure and it gets converted to gaseous state directly on decreasing pressure to one atmosphere.

Solution

Matter can change from one state to another without any change in its chemical composition by changing external factors like temperature and pressure applied on them.

The effect of pressure and temperature on various interconversion of states of matter is given below.

Effect of pressure:
  • Gasincrease in pressure−−−−−−−−−−−Liquidincrease in pressure−−−−−−−−−−−Solid
  • Soliddecrease in pressure−−−−−−−−−−−Liquiddecrease in pressure−−−−−−−−−−−Gas
Effect of temperature:
  • Gasdecrease in temperature−−−−−−−−−−−−−−Liquiddecrease in temperature−−−−−−−−−−−−−−Solid
  • Solidincrease in temperature−−−−−−−−−−−−−Liquidincrease in temperature−−−−−−−−−−−−−Gas
Some substances directly get converted from solid to gasesous state on heating and on decreasing the pressure and gasesous to solid state on cooling and on increasing the pressure. This process is of conversion from solid to gas is called sublimation and gas to solid is called deposition. The solids that undergo sublimation are called sublimable solids.

Carbon dioxide is a sublimable solid. Hence, it is gets converted to solid state directly by incresing pressure. Carbon dioxide is stored it solid state (also called as dry ice).

So, both statements are correct
