Electron gain enthalpy is defined as the amount of energy released/absorbed when an electron is added to an isolated gaseous atom. During the addition of an electron, energy can either be released or absorbed. The electron gain enthalpy becomes less negative as we go down the group.
On moving down the group, the electron gain enthalpy decreases from S to Po. Oxygen has an unexpectedly low value of electron gain enthalpy. Since oxygen is smaller in size than S, so incoming electron faces more electronic repulsion on oxygen outermost surface ( due to more edensity) as a result electron affinity decreases.
