The A.M. of two positive numbers is 15 and their GM is 12. What is the bigger number?
Soln:
Let the numbers be x and y.
x+y=30
xy = 144
(x−y)2=(x+y)2−4xy
900−(4×144)=324
hence (x–y)=18
Solving:x−y=18 & x+y=30
x = 24, y = 6
So, the bigger number is 24. Hence option (c)
