Sulphonation of benzene with oleum gives benzene sulphonic acid. Neutralisation with aq NaOH converts benzene sulphonic acid to sodium salt.
Dry sodium benzene sulphonate is fused with NaOH (excess) to obtain sodium phenoxide. Treatment with dil. sulphuric acid converts sodium phenoxide to phenol.
