The absolute refractive indices of glass and water are 43 and 32. If the speed of light in glass is 2×108 ms−1, calculate the speed of light in (i) vacuum, (ii) water.
Let ng be the absolute refractive index of glass.
Let nw be the absolute refractive index of water.
Let the speed of the light in glass be vg.
Given : ng=43, nw = 32, vg =2×108 ms−1
(i)We know that,
ng=Speed of light in vacuumSpeed of light in the given material=cvg
∴c=ng×vg
c=43×2×108=2.67×108 ms−1
(ii) Also, nw=cvw
∴vw=cnw=2.67×2×1083
vw=1.78×108 ms−1.
