b. water.

c. air.

Solution

Step -1 Given data.

The absolute refractive index of glass, ug=43

The absolute refractive index of water uw=32

The speed of light in the glass medium vg=2×108ms-1

Step 2- Finding the speed of light in a vacuum

The refractive index of the glass medium is given as

ug=cvg where c is the speed of light in a vacuum,

Substitute the values of the variables to find c.

43=c2×108m/sc=4×2×1083c=2.67×108m/s

Step 3 - Finding the speed of light in water.

Assume the speed of light is water as vw.

The refractive index of water in terms of speed of light is given by,

μw=cvw

Substitute the values into the formula.

32=2.67×108msvwvw=2.67×108×23=1.78×108ms

Step 4 - Finding the speed of light in air.

Assume the speed of light in air to be v.

The refractive index of air in terms of speed of light is given by,

μa=cv

Substitute the values into the formula.

1.0003=2.67×108msvv=2.67×1081.0003v=2.6691×108ms

Thus,

  1. The speed of light in water is 1.78×108ms.
  2. The speed of light in air is 2.6691×108m/s.
