Also assume the acceleration as shown in the figure.
For first block,
$Mgsin37-T=Ma$ --- (1)

For second block,
$T-Mgsin53=Ma$ -- (2)

(1) + (2) $\Rightarrow$

$a=\frac{Mg(sin37-sin53)}{2M}=\frac{-g}{10}$

So the direction of acceleration is opposite to that assumed.
Thus, the acceleration of the system is $1m/s^2$
