Question

The addition MnO2 to KClO3 decreases the temperature at which KClO3 decomposes because MnO2 added acts as a _______ catalyst.

Solution

Step-I

Positive catalyst:- This catalyst can be considered as the catalyst which initiates the reaction to take place at a faster rate.

For Example:- KClO3MnO22KCl+3O2(Potassium(potassium(oxygen)chlorate)chloride)

When potassium chlorate (KClO3) is heated in the presence of manganese dioxide (MnO2) catalyst then, it will decompose to form potassium chloride (KCl) and oxygen gas.

In this reaction, MnO2 (manganese dioxide) is acting like a positive catalyst.

This is because it is enhancing the rate of the reaction.
