Question

The addition of Cl2 to trans2pentene produces a racemic mixture. The percentage of nucleophilic attack at the two carbons of one chloronium ion is not necessarily equal due to __________.

Solution

During the addition of chlorine to trans2pentene to produce a racemic mixture of 2,3-dichloro pentane, two chloronium ions are obtained. The products formed by the attack of chloride ion (Cl) at each carbon of the two chloronium ion produces a racemic mixture of 2,3dichloropentane.

The percentage of nucleophilic attack at the two carbons of one chloronium ion are not necessarily equal. This is due to the difference in steric hindrance at the αcarbons.
