$$\begin{gathered} \mathrm{Area}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{parallelogram}=\mathrm{Base}\times \mathrm{Height} \\ \therefore AB\times DE=BC\times DF \\ \Rightarrow DE=\frac{BC\times DF}{AB} \\ =\frac{27\times 12}{36} \\ =9\mathrm{cm} \end{gathered}$$

∴ Distance between the longer sides = 9 cm
