The age of the rock can be determined by radioisotope dating. This is done by calculating daughter to parent ratio of the radioactive element. For example, that of Lead to Uranium. Uranium decay to Lead releases α particles. After first half life, amount of Lead present is 50% and amount of Uranium is 50% which requires 4.5 billion years, after second half life amount of Lead is 75% and amount of Uranium is 25%, so, the ratio 3:1 and age 9 billion years.. and so on.
