Question

The ages of the students in a class are in AP, whose common difference is 4months. If the youngest student is 8yr old and the sum of the ages of all the students is 168yr then find the number of students in the class.

Solution

Step 1. Given:

Here, the age of the youngest student, a=8yr.

Common difference,

d=4months=412yr=13yr.

The sum of the ages of all the students in the class is 168yr.

Sn=168

Let n be the number of students in the class.

Step 2. Find the quadratic equation by using the formula Sn=n2[2a+(n-1)d]:

Formula:

We know that the sum of the first n terms of an AP is Sn=n2[2a+(n-1)d]

Where a= first term and d= common difference.

168=n22×8+(n-1)×13168=n216+(n-1)×13168=n648+(n-1)

48n+n2-n=1008

Step 2. Solve the quadratic equation to find the values of n:

n2+47n-1008=0n2+63n-16n-1008=0n(n+63)-16(n+63)=0(n+63)n-16=0n=16andn=-63

Number of students cannot be negative

Hence, the number of students in the class is 16.
