Ernest Rutherford and his coworkers performed numerous experiments in which alpha particles emitted from a radioactive element such as polonium were allowed to strike thin sheets of metals such as gold or platinum.
A major fraction of the α-particles bombarded towards the gold sheet passed through it without any deflection, and hence most of the space in an atom is empty.
