Question

The altitude of a triangle is two-fifth the length of its corresponding base. If the altitude is increased by 4 cm and the base is decreased by 2 cm, then the area of the triangle remains the same. Find the base of the triangle in cm.

Open in App
Solution

Let the base of the triangle be x cm.

Then, the corresponding altitude of the triangle would be 2x5 cm.

If altitude is increased by 4 cm, the new altitude =2x5+4 cm

New base =x2 cm

Area of triangle =12×base×height

Since the area remains the same, 12×x×2x5=12×(2x5+4)×(x2)
x25 = x25+2x2x54
2x2x5=410x2x5=4
8x=20
x=208 x=212 cm
Hence, base of the triangle is212 cm long.
