Urine formation involves three main steps - ultrafiltration, reabsorption and secretion.

During ultrafiltration, blood plasma is filtered across a thin membrane formed by podocytes of Bowman’s capsule. On an average, around 180 L of filtrate is formed by both the kidneys per day. However approximately 99 percent of this filtrate is absorbed back into the body during tubular reabsorption. The final amount of urine released is 1.5 litres per day.
