Question

The amplitude of SHM at resonance is _______ in the ideal case of zero damping.

Open in App
Solution

Amplitude of SHM

  1. Amplitude is the maximum displacement of a particle from its mean position
  2. Damping is the resistance to the displacement of the particle from its mean position.
  3. Resonant frequency is the natural frequency of an oscillating body.
  4. When force is applied at the frequency the body is oscillating (i.e., resonating with the object), its amplitude keeps increasing.
  5. When there is no resistance applied (i.e, the damping) for the displacement, the amplitude will grow to infinity.
  6. Hence, the amplitude of SHM at resonance is infinite in the ideal case of zero damping.
