Question

The analysis of a water sample produces the following results

IonConcentration mg/lAtomic WeightCa2+ 20.0 60Mg2+ 12.2 36.6Na+ 23.0 92K+ 39.1 78.2SO24 48.0 72 HCO3 61.0 122The total hardness (in mg/L as CaCO3) of the water sample is

  1. 300

Solution

The correct option is A 300
Hardness will be due to multivalent cations only
Ca2+=60mg/L
equivalent weight =20 (given)

Mg2+=36.6mg/L
equivalent wight =12.2 (given)

milliequivalent of
Ca2+=6020=3
Mg2+=36.612.2=3

Total hardness mg/L as (CaCO3)
= (milliequivalent of Ca2++ milliequivalent of
mg2+)× equivalent weight of CaCO3

=(3+3)×1002

=300mg/L as CaCO3
