Question

The angle of a prism is A. One of its refracting surface is silvered. Light rays falling at an angle of incident 2A on the first surface returns back through the same path after suffering reflection at the silvered surface. The refractive index μ, of the prism is

Solution

The correct option is B 2 cosA
On reflection from the silvered surface, the incident ray will retrace its path, if it falls normally on the surface.

In the ΔPMN,

M=(18090A)=(90A)

Since, (90A)+r1=90

r1=A

Applying Snell's law at the surface PQ,

μair sini=μprism sinr1

Substituting the given data we have ,

1sini=μsinr1

μ=sin2AsinA [i=2A]

μ=2sinAcosAsinA [sin2A=2sinAcosA]

μ=2cosA

Hence, option (b) is the correct answer.
