Question

The angle of minimum deviation produced by a 60o prism is 40o. Calculate the refractive index of the material of the prism.

Open in App
Solution

Minimum deviation δ=2iA
where A is prism angle A=60o
So δ=40o
we know
δ=2iA
40=2i60
i=50o
For minimum angle the angle of refraction should be half of prism angle.
So r=A/2=30o
now using the snell's law
nairsini=nglasssinr
sin50=nglasssin30
nglass=1.53 ,
