Solution

The correct option is B

SO3

Let the oxidation state of sulfur in Pyrosulphuric Acid(H2S2O7) is 'x'.

Then

2(+1)+2'x'+7(-2)=02+2x-14=02x=12x=+6.

The oxidation state of sulfur in Pyrosulphuric Acid(H2S2O7) is '+6'

Then the oxidation state of sulfur in anhydride of Pyrosulphuric Acid(H2S2O7) must also be +6.

Explanation of correct option

Option (B)

Let, the oxidation state of sulfur in sulfur trioxideSO3 is 'p'.

Then

p+3(-2)=0p-6=0p=+6

The oxidation state of sulfur in sulfur trioxideSO3 is '+6'.

Explanation of Incorrect option

Option (A)

Let the oxidation state of sulfur in sulfur dioxideSO2 is ‘q’.

Then

q+2(-2)=0q-4=0q=+4

Option (C)

Let the oxidation state of sulfur S2O7-2 is ‘r’.

2(r)+7(-2)=(-2)2r-14=-22r=+12r=+6

The oxidation state of sulfur S2O7-2 is ‘+6’ also but it is not an anhydride of Pyrosulphuric Acid(H2S2O7). As it contains the same number of oxygen atoms.

Option (D)

Let the oxidation state of sulfur S2O3-2 is ‘s’.

Then

2(s)+3(-2)=(-2)2s-6=-22s=+4s=+2

The oxidation state of sulfur S2O3-2 is ‘+2’.

Hence, Option(B) is correct.
