Question

The anode rays (positive rays) obtained from _______ gas, consists of only protons.

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen gas (H2) produces positive rays which only consists of protons.

  • Atomic number of Hydrogen=1
  • Therefore the number of electron= Number of protons= 1
  • Mass number of Hydrogen= 1
  • As Mass number= Number of protons+ Number of neutrons
  • Number of neutrons= 1-1= 0 i.e.; Hydrogen atoms only have an electron and a proton.

As electrons are knocked out of Hydrogen atoms in the discharge tube, positively charged ion of Hydrogen is produced that only consists of one proton. Therefore, Hydrogen gas produces positive rays which only consists of protons.

Hence, the anode rays (positive rays) obtained from hydrogen gas, consists of only protons.
