Question

The aqueous solution of inorganic compound (X) yielded a white precipitate when treated with dilute HNO3 and AgNO3. Another sample of the solution of (X) when treated with NaOH gave a white precipitate first which dissolved in excess of NaOH yielding a colorless solution. When H2S gas was passed through that solution a white precipitate was obtained.

Solution

The correct option is A ZnCl2

Upon reaction with dil HNO3 and AgNO3, X yielded a white precipitate. This indicates the presence of Chloride ion in X (see the reaction (i)).

When X was treated with NaOH, it gave a white precipitate. Since hydroxides of Na and Ba are soluble they won't form a precipitate, indicating C and D as wrong options. Whereas, hydroxides of both Zn and Al form a white precipitate, which dissolved in excess of NaOH yielding a colourless solution (see reactions (ii)).

On treatment with H2S, a white precipitate was obtained. This indicates the presence of Zn ion in X (see the reaction

(iii)). Thus the answer is option A, ZnCl2.

Hence, the correct option is A
