Question

The area of cross section of two cylinders of a Hydraulic press are 10 cm2 and 50 cm2 respectively. In order to move up a weight of 100 N placed on the piston of larger area of the press, force supplied on the piston of smaller area is (y×10) Newton. Find 'y'.

Solution

Given a1=10 cm2 and a2=50 cm2
Also given F2=100 N, F1=?
Pressure is equal on both the pistons P1=P2
F1a1=F2a2
F1=(F2a2)a1=(10050)10 20 N
Thus 20 N force applied on the piston of smaller area is sufficient to lift a weight of 100 N placed on the piston of larger area.
