The pressure exerted by the air per unit area is called atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric pressure decreases with an increase in height. At sea level, the air exerts larger pressure since the height of the air column is more at sea level.

At higher elevations, there are fewer air molecules above a given surface than a similar surface at lower levels which means that the pressure is less. For example, there are fewer molecules above a surface at 60 km(height) than a surface of same area at 10 km(height) surface from the ground level, which is why the pressure is less at 60 km height.
