Question

The atom of an element X has 7 electrons in its M shell.
(a) Write the electronic configuration of element X.
(b) What is the atomic number of element X?
(c) Is it a metal or a non-metal?
(d) What type of ion will be formed by an atom of element X? Write the symbol of the ion formed.
(e) What could element X be?

Solution

(a) Atom of an element X has 7 electrons in its M shell, so its electronic configuration will be 2,8,7
K- 2 L-8 M - 7

(b)Total electrons of X= 2+8+ 7 = 17, hence no. of protons = no. of electrons = atomic no. = 17.
Hence it's atomic no. is 17
(c) Electronic configuration of X is 2,8,7. So it will gain one electron to complete its octet. So X is a non-metal as non-metals accept electrons.
(d) X will gain one electron to complete its octet, so it will form anion (negative ion); X1
(e) X will be Chlorine (Cl) as Cl(atomic no.- 17) is a non-metal with electronic configuration-2,8,7 which will gain one electron to form an anion Cl1
