We have been provided with the atomic number of sodium and oxygen. Using this information we can write the electronic configuration and find their valency of both the elements.

Name of the element Electronic configuration Valency
Sodium 2, 8, 1 1
Oxygen 2, 6 2

Since sodium has a valency one and oxygen has valency two we can use the cross over method. We interchange the valency of both the elements and write them in the subscript for each element. Hence the formula we get is Na2O.
