The average age of a group of 15 men is 52 years. The average age of the group is decreased by 3 years when an older member is replaced by a new younger member. Find the difference (in years) between the age of the elder member and the younger member.

Let E and Y be the age of the elder member and the younger member, respectively.

Sum of their age before replacement = 15 × 52 years

Sum of their age after replacement = 15 × 49 years = (15 × 52 – E + Y) years

⇒ E – Y = 15 × (52 – 49) = 15 × 3 = 45 years

Hence, option C is the correct answer.
