The average runs scored by a batsman in 40 ODIs this year is 50. His highest score exceeds the lowest score by 172. If those two scores are excluded, then his average for the remaining 38 innings is 48. Find the highest score of the player.

Total runs scored by the batsman in his 40 innings this year =40×50=2000
Total runs if we ignore the highest and lowest scorers =40×50(x+172+x)=18282x
Total runs scored in 38 innings =38×48=1824
So, 18282x=1824x=2
Therefore, his highest score = 172+x = 172+2 = 174
