The average temperature of New York city for the first 4 days of the month was 58. The average temperature for the second, third, fourth and fifth days were 60. If the temperatures of 1st and 5th days were in the ratio 7: 8, then find the temperature on the fifth day.

Let the temperatures on day 1 and 5 be 7x and 8x, and the temperatures on day 2, 3 and 4 be a, b and c.
Sum total of temperatures observed in the first 4 days =4×58=7x+a+b+c=232
Sum total of temperatures observed from day 2 to 5 =4×60=a+b+c+8x=240
From the two equations above, we get x = 8
Therefore, temperature on day 5=8x=8×8=64
