Question

The average time taken by a normal person to react to an emergency is one fifteenth of a second and is called reaction time. The reaction time of people increases when they are intoxicated. If a bus is moving with a velocity of 90km/hr and its driver sees a child running across the road, how much distance had the bus moved if the reaction time of driver was ½ second under the influence of alcohol?

Solution

velocity (v) of bus, = 90km/ h=90×518=25ms1
velocity (v) of bus, =25m/s =25m/s

time =115sec

so distance covered by bus, = velocity ×time
so distance covered by bus =25×115=53ms1 = 1.66 metre

for intoxicated driver:
Reaction time =12sec
so
distance 25×12=12.5m = 12.5 metre
