Question

The base of an iron saucepan has a diameter of 20 cm at 15C. What will be the increase in the area of the base of the scaucepan when it is filled with boiling water? Given coefficient of linear expansion of iron =2×106perC

Solution

Linear expansion coefficient α=2×106
Area expansion coefficient β=2α=4×106
Area of saucepan is A=πR2=π102=314cm2
Temperature of boiling water is 100oC.
ΔT=10020=80oC
ΔA=AβΔT=314×4×106×80
ΔA=0.1cm2
