The basic categorisation of amino acids depends on their
Amino group
H atoms
Carboxyl group
All amino acids have an alpha carbon atom that binds to an amino group, a carboxyl group, Hydrogen atom and an R-group. There are twenty different amino acids that occur commonly in biological systems based on the type of R group present. For example, if the R group in an amino acid contains methyl group (CH3) it is called Alanine. The characterisitc feature of an amino acid is also dependent on the R group, if the R group is hydrophillic the amino acid falls under the hydrophillic category.
