The bob A of a pendulum released from 30o to the vertical hits another bob B of the same mass at rest on a table as shown in Fig. 6.15. How high does the bob A rise after the collision? Neglect the size of the bobs and assume the collision to be elastic.

In case of an elastic collision with the ball at rest, the velocities between the bob and the ball will get interchanged. The result of this will be an immediate rest of the bob A. On the other hand, the ball will attain the final speed of the bob A just before the collision has occurred.

Therefore, the bob A will not rise after the collision with the ball.
