Question

The boiling point of water is higher than that of pertoleum. In which of the two, the intermolecular forces of attraction is stronger and why?

Solution

Dear student,

Boiling point of a liquid is dependent on the strength or the extent of intermolecular forces of attraction within the liquid. These are those forces that binds the molecules of the liquid together, so if the extent of these forces is high in the liquid, then more heat is needed to overcome these forces, Thereby the boiling point of the liquid increases. So we can conclude that, the boiling point of a liquid is directly proportional to the extent of intermolecular forces in the liquid. So in water the intermolecular forces of attraction is stronger .
