Solution

The correct option is D

Covalent bond

Chemical bonds

A chemical bond is an attractive force that holds various atoms, ions or molecules together. Chemical bonds are formed between metals and non-metals, non-metals and non-metals, ions etc. The type of chemical bond depends on the nature of the attractive force. Chemical bonds make the atoms function as a unit. The three main types of chemical bonds are ionic, covalent and coordinate bonds.

Group 14 is the carbon family and are non-metals. Similarly, group 17 elements are called halogens. They are also non-metals that accept one electron to complete their octet.

Explanations for wrong answers

(A) Electrovalent bond is also called an ionic bond and is formed by the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another. Therefore, one atom must be electron-donating (metal) and another atom must be electron-accepting (Non-metal). Since elements of group 14 and group 17 are non-metals, option (A) is incorrect.

(B) Co-ordinate bond is a particular case of a covalent bond in which the shared pair of electrons belongs to the same element. It occurs between an electron-deficient atom and an electron-rich atom. Since elements of both groups 14 and 17 are non-metals, they do not tend to donate electrons. Therefore, option (B) is incorrect.

(C) Vander Waals bond is a weak electrostatic bond formed by the attraction between temporary dipole formed in an atom due to the movement of electrons. The bond between groups 14 and 17 are permanent bonds, and therefore, option (C) is incorrect.

Explanation for correct answer

(D) Elements of groups 14 and 17 are non-metals. Due to this, their electronegativities are close enough. Therefore, they cannot cause ionization of each other and therefore, they share electrons in the outer shell to acquire stable electronic configuration. This type of bond formed by sharing electrons between two elements is called a covalent bond. That is, a covalent bond is a shared pair of electrons in which each electron comes from one of the bonded elements.

Therefore, the correct option is (D) Covalent bond.
